Praia do Rosa

Praia do Rosa is a crescent bay under two kilometres long on the south coast of Santa Catarina, held between green morros and the sea. The hills kept their Atlantic Forest, the village was built into them rather than over them, and footpaths drop through the trees to the sand.

The energy

Why the place feels alive.

This is whale country. From June to November, southern right whales come to calve inside a marine reserve of over a hundred and fifty thousand hectares, close enough to watch from the hillside and sometimes within two hundred metres of the beach. The surf runs long and mellow on the north side and faster on the south, and behind the bay the Lagoa de Ibiraquera opens to the sea.

It is humid and subtropical, warm and busy in the southern summer and genuinely quiet from June to September, which is also the whale season. April is the driest month, but rain falls lightly all year and the forest stays green.

For builders and creatives

Why builders come here.

Praia do Rosa grew from a village of surfers and hippies into something quieter and more considered, luxury measured in views and forest rather than marble. Florianópolis and its technology scene lie ninety kilometres north, about ninety minutes up the coast road. Capital in Floripa, craft in Rosa. Come for one clear stretch of work at a time, not a permanent desk.

Good to know
  • Whale season runs June to November, the quietest, coolest months.
  • Summer, December to February, is warm and lively.
  • Internet is pousada grade, so bring a mobile hotspot for critical work.
  • Some roads are unpaved and the terrain is steep and hilly.
Getting there

Florianópolis airport is about ninety minutes north on the BR-101, the usual way in. The time zone runs an hour ahead of New York. Be honest about the internet, it is pousada grade rather than city grade, so bring a mobile hotspot and treat this as a place for deep sprints, not always-on work.
